After you have spent some time on a website, you probably have some sense of how the site is arranged. That is, you have constructed a mental map in your head that can help you find what you want.
Studies have shown that some people are very, very good at this - most site designers fit into this category. They tend to create sites that make sense to them - but not to most people (average people), who find it difficult to really visualize how a site is laid out.
If you want to have a usable site, you will need to create a navigation structure that makes it easy for everyone to find what they want.
